The speed cameras, which must be placed within a quarter-mile radial distance from a school building, issue $50 fines to drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour. Though the number of school zones with cameras is legally capped at 750, zones are permitted to have multiple cameras, with roughly 2,000 total operating throughout the five boroughs.
